Centuries ago, when healers cameprimarily from the ranks of monks, rabbis, and imams, and when nurses were nunsor members of religious orders, there was no clear divide between biology andacts of God in the genesis of an illness or between the physical and spiritualcomponents of its treatment. In the modern era, religion and science areunderstood to be sharply divided, the two occupying very different domains.Religion explores the nature of God and offers rituals for implementing God"s will, whereas science eschews any such metaphysics and through experimentationunveils the workings of the material world.
4. Andso, unsure of where to Fix the boundary between theprofessional and the personal, unsure what words were appropriate, I drew on theTalmudic custom of my ancestors and the pedagogical practice of my mentors andanswered her question with a question.
"Whatis the prayer you want?"
"Prayfor God to give my doctors wisdom," Anna said.
To that,I silently echoed, "Amen."
IV.
V. Reflection:
95 percent of Americans believe inGod including many doctors. Many patients want their physicians to be engagedin their spiritual lives and pray for them. It seems alien to us Chinese peoplewho don’t have religious life. But one thing is for sure, a doctor’s words havegreat power for a patient, they can help to heal, and they can do great harm. Agood doctor is the one using heart not the mind only.
